Our Vision
Believing that all children are created and endowed by God with extraordinary potential to become outstanding Kingdom citizens, the Joshua Christian Academy covenants with the families and churches of urban Des Moines to provide an excellent, affordable Christian education.
We believe that economically disadvantaged children can perform at the highest level, and we will set high expectations for students and their families. With God’s help, students will become family and community leaders, working for justice, economic opportunity, and racial harmony, unifying the body of Christ in this city and throughout the world.
STATEMENT OF FAITH

Authority and Reliability of Scripture

Belief in the authority and reliability of the Bible as the inspired and infallible Word of God. The Bible is the complete and final revelation of God concerning all matters of faith, truth, and practice. All truth is God’s truth (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20-21).

We do not affirm any one translation as having exclusive or final authority. Our standard practice is to use the English Standard Version (ESV), Christian Standard Bible (CSB), King James Version (KJV), and other faithful translations of the Bible.

Belief in the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Belief in the Gospel, which is the good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day, according to the Scriptures. Through faith in Him, we are forgiven of our sins and reconciled to God, receiving eternal life (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:16; John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Salvation by Grace Through Faith

Belief that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone, not by works, and is a gift from God that cannot be earned by human efforts (Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5). A person is justified by faith in Jesus Christ and not by the works of the law (Romans 3:28).

God's Sovereignty and Omnipotence

Belief in the Trinity (or Godhead), of the one true God (Matthew 28:19), the deity of Jesus Christ (I Timothy 3:16; John 1:1; 10:30), His virgin birth (Like 1:30-35), sinless life (Romans 8:3; Hebrews 4:15), miracles (Mark 1:27; John 2:11), atonement of our sins by His blood sacrifice (Matthew 26:28), His bodily resurrection (John 20:1-9), ascension, His personal return in power and glory (Mark 16:19, 13:26). Belief in the Holy Spirit as teacher of God’s Truth (John 14:17) and as giver of new life in Christ and who unites all believers in Christ (Titus 3:5).

Belief in the Trinity

Mankind's Creation and Fall

Belief that mankind is the crown of God’s creation. God endowed man with His image and gave him the responsibility to rule the earth (Genesis 1:26-27) and that sin has severely broken the relationship between God and mankind (Romans 3:23), mankind and themselves, (James 4:1), and mankind and nature (Romans 8:20-22).

The Nature of Consequences of Sin

Belief that sin, no matter how “small” or egregious, is infinitely offensive to a holy God, yet God’s grace and mercy are greater than any sin, offering complete forgiveness through Jesus Christ to all who repent and trust in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:9; Ephesians 1:7).

Eternal Security of the Believer

Belief in the eternal security of the believer. When a person is born again, the believer cannot lose salvation, as it is upheld by God’s power and not by human effort. Salvation is sealed by the Holy Spirit, guaranteeing our inheritance until the day of redemption (John 10:28-29; Ephesians 1:13-14; Romans 8:38-39).

Sanctity of Human Life

Belief in the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death: Every human being is created in the image of God and has inherent value. Therefore, the unjust taking of a life – including abortion, infanticide and euthanasia – violates God’s commandment (Jeremiah 1:5, Psalm 139:8-9 Exodus 20:13).

Importance of the Local Church

Belief that Christians are called to be part of a local church where qualified elders and overseers shepherd the flock, teaching sound doctrine in accordance with God’s Word and the values outlined in our statement of faith. While each believer has a personal relationship with Christ, we are also called to gather corporately as the body of Christ for worship, fellowship, and mutual encouragement (Hebrews 10:24-25; 1 Peter 5:1-3; Titus 1:9, 1 Timothy 3:1–7).

God as the Author of Life

Belief that God is the author of life, and only He has the sovereign right to give and take it. As a school, we affirm the responsibility to protect and nurture life at all stages, reflecting God’s love and care for all people, especially the most vulnerable (Deuteronomy 32:39; Proverbs 31:8-9; James 1:27).

Freedom from the Law to Freedom in Christ

We believe that Christians are no longer under the law but under grace (Romans 6:14). We rest in the fulfillment found in Jesus Christ, who has fulfilled the law (Colossians 2:16-17; Matthew 11:28-30). As believers, we are not required to follow restrictions of the Old Testament law to attain salvation or to be more obedient to God. We reject any teaching that places works-based requirements on salvation, as it undermines the sufficiency of Christ’s grace as we’ve entered new covenant with Him. (Galatians 5:1-4).

Celebration of Special Days to the Glory of God

We believe that Christians are free to observe occasions such as Christmas, Resurrection Day, birthdays, and other special days to the glory of God. While these celebrations are not commanded in Scripture, they are not sinful when celebrated with a heart of worship and gratitude toward God (Romans 14:5-6; Colossians 2:16-17; 1 Corinthians 10:31). While we recognize that not all traditions are beneficial, we encourage celebrating those that honor and glorify God.

The Responsibility of Family

Belief that God established the family as the basic unit of society. Parents are ultimately responsible for the instruction and discipline of their children. The Christian School is simply an extension of the educational process of the family and the church providing a supportive basis of encouragement to the family and the church (Ephesians 5:22-23; Proverbs 22:6).

In conclusion, our statement of faith affirms foundational truths of God according to the Bible. JCA affirms the authority of Scripture as the inspired Word of God and recognize God’s sovereignty in all things. We uphold the deity of Jesus Christ, His redemptive work through the plan of the Father, and the vital role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We believe in the sanctity of human life and the transformative power of the Gospel and agree that we are called to live a life of growing conformity to Christ. While acknowledging that sinless perfection is not possible in this life, we commit to pursuing holiness and living out our faith with integrity and love. As a Christian community, we value the role of the biblical family, the importance of education centered on biblical truth, and the freedom to celebrate all days to the glory of God. Our ultimate goal is to honor God in all aspects of life through our beliefs and actions.

PILLARS OF TRUTH

One God, Represented in Three Persons

We believe in one God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit—distinct yet one in essence.

· Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

· Matthew 28:19 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

The Father is God

God the Father is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, sovereign over the universe.

· Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Jesus Christ is God

Jesus Christ, as the eternal Son of God, is the Creator of all things, demonstrating His divine authority and power.

· John 1:1-3 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.”

· Colossians 1:16-17 – “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible… all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

The Holy Spirit is God

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity who indwells believers, empowers them for holy living, and guides them into all truth.

· Acts 5:3-4 – “You have not lied to man but to God.

Stance on Marriage

Marriage is a God-ordained union between one man and one woman, reflecting Christ’s relationship with His Church.

· Genesis 2:24 – “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

· Matthew 19:4-6 – “What God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Social Justice and Racial Reconciliation

We believe in justice, equality, and love for all people, affirming the unity of all believers in Christ regardless of race, class, or background.

· Micah 6:8 – “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

· Galatians 3:28 – “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Care for the Poor and Less Fortunate

Believers are called to serve and care for the poor, oppressed, and marginalized, reflecting God’s heart for justice and mercy.

· James 1:27 – “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God…is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction.”

Care for Unborn Children and Advocacy for Life

We affirm the sanctity of human life from conception and stand against abortion, advocating for the protection of the unborn.

We call the Church to speak up for the voiceless, provide care for those considering abortion, and support adoption as a loving alternative.

· Psalm 139:13-14 – “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

· Proverbs 31:8 – “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute.”

Stance on LGBTQ and Transgenderism

We believe that God created humanity as male and female, and any attempt to alter this biological reality is against God’s design. We uphold the dignity of all people, but affirm that God’s purpose for human sexuality is expressed only within the marriage of one man and one woman.

· Genesis 1:27 – “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

· Romans 1:26-27 – “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions.”

· 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 – “Neither the sexually immoral… nor men who practice homosexuality… will inherit the kingdom of God.”

False, Works-Based Religions

We reject all works-based religions and affirm that salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. All other belief systems are false and cannot lead to eternal life.

· John 14:6 – “No one comes to the Father except through me.”

· Acts 4:12 – “And there is salvation in no one else.”
